A Brief History Of The Pietermaai District
The district takes its name from Dutch explorer Jan Pieterszoon Maartenszoon (or “Pietermaij”) who first visited the island in 1634. The area was originally developed by wealthy merchants who built their homes here to take advantage of its prime waterfront location. Over time, these houses were replaced by more modern brick or stone buildings, which still line the streets. As Willemstad grew into an increasingly important port in the 18th and 19th centuries, Pietermaai also became a center for trade and commerce. In 1997, it was placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its unique blend of old-fashioned Dutch architecture combined with local Caribbean-style structures.
