The Pietermaai District Curacao
Curacao’s Historic Boutique Destination
The island’s capital is divided into Punda and Otrabanda. However, Punda has another suburb, called Curaçao’s Pietermaai District. This historic district is truly an amazing confluence of beautiful architecture and culture. Its cobblestone streets full of life make it a perfect destination for travelers looking for an unforgettable experience. With its history as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its reputation as one of Curaçao’s trendiest spots, it’s no wonder the Pietermaai District is becoming an increasingly popular destination for travelers.
Once the sun sets in Willemstad, visitors and locals alike are drawn to the Pietermaai District. This historic neighborhood houses beautiful architecture and has become a vibrant hub for boutique hotels, cozy restaurants, hip clubs and stylish cafes.
A Brief History Of The Pietermaai District
The district takes its name from Dutch explorer Jan Pieterszoon Maartenszoon (or “Pietermaij”) who first visited the island in 1634. The area was originally developed by wealthy merchants who built their homes here to take advantage of its prime waterfront location. Over time, these houses were replaced by more modern brick or stone buildings, which still line the streets. As Willemstad grew into an increasingly important port in the 18th and 19th centuries, Pietermaai also became a center for trade and commerce. In 1997, it was placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for its unique blend of old-fashioned Dutch architecture combined with local Caribbean-style structures.
